Suntory PepsiCo Thailand Highlights Water Conservation Mission with ‘Good People & Water’ and ‘Living with Water’ Initiatives

Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a manufacturer and distributor of beverages under the Suntory and PepsiCo brands in Thailand, recognizes the vital importance of water as a precious natural resource. All living things need "water" for survival, which is also crucial for its business operations. Therefore, the company has launched "Mizuiku" program since 2019 and continued to do so to date. The objective of this program is to educate Thai youth about the importance of water resources and the environment through various activities. These include promoting water resource conservation in daily life and reinforcing corporate values of "Growing for Good" and "Giving Back to Society" by turning them into practice.

Apart from youth, people in the watershed areas and the employees of Suntory PepsiCo Thailand are acknowledged as essential contributors to sustainable water conservation. Consequently, the company organized the "Good People and Water" activity in Phetchabun Province, focusing on    Nam Nao National Park, a vital watershed area of the Pa Sak River. This river is crucial for the livelihoods of many people and the ecosystems of numerous provinces in the central region. Executives and volunteer staff of Suntory PepsiCo Thailand, along with representatives from various local agencies, including Nam Nao District of Phetchabun Province, Nam Nao National Park, the Association of Phetchabun Mountain Range Preservation and Development, Rak Pasak Foundation, and local people, totaling more than 100 people, participated in the activity. Together, they engaged in activities to cultivate and promote water conservation and environmental protection.

  1. Constructing underground water banks to collect rainwater from the ground surface and store it underground. This initiative aims to mitigate flooding during the rainy season and preserve excess water to replenish moisture levels during the dry season, all while allowing continued use of the soil.
  2. Organizing a life-prolonging ceremony to honor the Pa Sak River, blending local cultural traditions with water conservation efforts. This ceremony fosters a reverence for the watershed forests among local communities, instilling a commitment to environmental care for future generations.
  3. Planting Deeplagung (Phlogacanthus pulcherrimus) trees within the Pa Sak watershed area to combat soil erosion.
  4. Establishing artificial saltlicks to supply wildlife with essential minerals, fostering a naturally balanced ecosystem.
  5. Constructing check dams to retain water, prevent soil erosion and preserve sediment to reduce the flow rate of water resources at the lower section.

In addition to the "Good People and Water" activity, Suntory PepsiCo Thailand is furthering its water conservation mission by spearheading positive changes across the watershed areas and urban communities. Collaborating with the Khlong Toei District Office, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the company has initiated the “Living with Water” project to revitalize water sources and enhancing the landscape along Khlong Toei. This initiative encompasses various activities, including the installation of trash traps to facilitate efficient waste collection, deploying a solar-powered water turbine to boost oxygen levels in the water, adjusting water conditions and treating wastewater, reintroducing fish to restore the ecosystem, and constructing a walkway fence for pedestrian safety. Furthermore, diverse plant species were planted, notably the "Pandan" tree, symbolizing Khlong Toei's heritage. The objective is to preserve "Khlong Toei," a historic water source in Bangkok, transforming it into a functional area and a center for educating the local community on water conservation. Khlong Toei holds significance as a community area close to the company's head office.

Thus, we have launched the 'Good People and Water' activity to instill a culture of water conservation among our workforces. This initiative underscores our commitment to nurturing capable and socially responsible individuals who will grow alongside the organization and contribute positively to society and the environment. Furthermore, the 'Living with Water' project exemplifies our dedication to giving back to society. By enhancing the area alongside Khlong Toei’s canal to be utilizing area for the local community, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation. This project serves as an example of harmonious coexistence with water, aligning with   the objectives of our 'Mizuiku' program.”
