PACKAGING
“Packaging Sustainability Management” is one of the most important sustainability policies of the company. This reflects the vision of “Growing for Good” or sustainable growth in conducting business while taking care of society and the environment. Since 2018, we have reduced the use of virgin plastic by a total of 531.6 tons. This is the cumulative amount from 2018 to the end of 2021. This helps to save natural resources as well as having a positive effect on the environment.
Most importantly, we pay attention to the upstream process (Eco-design packaging) which emphasizes using PET plastic an environmentally friendly and easy to manage material that can be 100% recycled. All of our packaging in all beverages uses PET bottles. In addition to the bottle, caps and labels are also made from 100% recyclable materials. All caps are made of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) material, a high-density plastic which is suitable for use in packaging. Labels are made from 2 types of plastic, namely Shrink Sleeve Label made of PET, and Oriented Polypropylene Label made of PP (Polypropylene) using production technology to reduce the amount of plastic needed in comparison to the weight per piece of label. All our bottles are clear, colorless and easy to recycle with a subsequent higher purchasing value than colored bottles. With Pepsi bottle caps, the color print on the cap has been removed to reduce the use of cleaning chemicals in the recycling process.
At the midstream, we have initiated and organized various offline and online programs and workshops to educate consumers, school children, teachers, youths, community leaders, local authority officials and others on the importance of proper waste segregation, waste management with the 3R principles (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) and to enhance their knowledge on PET plastic packaging.
For the downstream, we recognize the importance of collecting beverage packaging back into the recycling system as much as possible. Therefore, the company has joined hands with Wongpanit - Thailand's largest waste management firm. Wongpanit announced the purchase of clear PET bottles of Suntory PepsiCo Thailand at a price higher than other PET bottles by paying an additional 1 baht per kilogram. The price will be announced on daily basis. This is to promote waste segregation and systematically bring used PET plastic bottles back into the recycling process.
Packaging Sustainability Management
In addition, we have been promoting Waste Segregation with the aim of helping increase the collection rate of plastic waste. The company therefore initiated and organized many projects and activities together with business partners, NGOs, schools, and communities, for example:
- “Waste Segregation Program” This program was aimed to educate school children, teachers, and community leaders in Saraburi province on the importance of waste segregation and recycling. There were 11 schools and 11 communities in Nong Khae, Kaeng Khoi and Wihan Daeng districts. 240 bins of four colored types were donated to schools and communities in Saraburi province.
- “ReFun Machine” A pilot project was initiated in 2020 with Jiffy convenience stores located in 10 PTT stations and in 2021 with CP All by putting ‘ReFun Machines” in front of ten 7-Eleven stores in Bangkok and metropolitan areas. The aim was to promote waste segregation and recycling of PET bottles.
- “Nong Boobie Helps Doctors” Drop point boxes for collecting used clear, colorless PET beverage bottles were put in 33 condominiums around Bangkok. The result was over 36,000 used PET bottles collected and then converted to 2,000 sets of PPE suits for 10 hospitals. This is a part in helping to protect doctors, nurses, and all frontline personnel while on duty during the COVID-19 crisis.
